Why Lendgreen is not in our comparison
We could not confirm current loan amounts or APRs from a reliable source. Its parent, LDF Holdings, settled a $37.35 million class action in 2024 that cancelled about $1.4 billion in borrower debt.
The 2024 class action settlement
In 2024, LDF Holdings and its partners agreed to a $37.35 million class action settlement covering borrowers nationwide who took loans from LDF lending companies, including Lendgreen, from July 24, 2016 through the settlement's 2024 cutoff. The settlement cancelled about $1.4 billion in outstanding loans. The lawsuit alleged that the lenders charged interest far above state limits while claiming state law did not apply. Tribal officials denied wrongdoing. Under the settlement, LDF can continue its lending operations.
State action
In November 2024, the Minnesota Attorney General secured a consent order requiring twelve LDF lenders, including Lendgreen, to stop lending to Minnesotans at rates above state limits and to cancel existing Minnesota balances. Washington's Department of Financial Institutions has warned that Lendgreen and related LDF companies are not licensed to lend in Washington.
A Supreme Court case
In 2023, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in a case involving a Lendgreen borrower, Brian Coughlin, that the federal Bankruptcy Code overrides tribal sovereign immunity. In practice, that means a tribal lender must respect the automatic stay that stops collection once a borrower files for bankruptcy.
If you have or had a Lendgreen loan
Check whether your loan fell within the settlement period, because balances on covered loans were cancelled. Keep records of every payment. If you are being contacted about a debt you believe was cancelled, ask for written validation and file a complaint with the CFPB or your state attorney general. Our guide to getting out of a tribal loan covers each step.
